Keating Wines

Beckstoffer Georges III Cabernet Sauvignon (Rutherford, Napa)

2008
  • 94 points, Wine Enthusiast, August 2011.......... "An ultrarich Cabernet that shows the pedigree of its vineyard.  It's dramatic in blackberry, cherry, plum, cassis, chocolate, anise and baking spice flavors, wrapped into a wonderfully soft, gentle tannins.  With a long, sweet finish, it should develop over the next 10 years."
  • 90 points, Connoisseur's Guide to California Wine, August 2011......... "Very nicely put together aromas redolent of herbs, currants, lavender and caramel lead into a supple entry followed by surprisingly tannic and coarsely textured impressions across the palate. Both very rich and somewhat dry in the finish, this wine demands a bit of a leap of faith that it will age out, but given its very successful vineyard, it is a leap that poses only the normal risks we all assume with young wine."
  • Gold Medal, 2012 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition
2009
  • 90 points, Wine Enthusiast, June 2012......... "To call this anything other than modern in style would be incorrect.  It’s soft and silky and direct in blackberry and cherry jam, chocolate and caramel flavors, although the finish is technically dry. Delicious and fancy, and will appeal to fans of ripe, sweet fruit, but it doesn’t have the structure for aging."
2010
  • 92 points, Wine Enthusiast, June 2013......... "This is a remarkably detailed Cabernet that shows off everything Napa has to give in the way of flash and richness. It's dry, yet lush with ripe blackberry, blueberry, and cassis flavors and plenty of toasty new oak. The tannins are as soft and complex as any in the world, making this wine beautiful to drink now."
  • 90 points, Connoisseur's Guide to California Wine, April 2013......... "Fairly intense, outgoing in aromas that range from ripe black cherry to caramelly oak to forest floor complexity, this full-bodied bottling is still youthfully bound up in ripeness and in tannin, and while it reveals its inner fruit, its gruffness and slight acidy ending keep it from speaking with its full voice at present. Time is on its side, and with concentrated fruit at its heart and a very solid structure, it should hold and improve for a decade, and will be better for that kind of patience."
  • Gold Medal, 2013 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition
2012
  • 91 points, Connoisseur's Guide to California Wine, April 2015......... "Although leading with deep and very expressive aromas of ripe currants, black olives, sweet oak and loamy soil and following up with solid, equally deep flavors that are definitively Cabernet in conviction, this sturdy, well-muscled youngster is not close to being ready for prime time. Its inviting beginnings are blunted by a raft of overly obvious tannins, and a touch of heat shows through in its mouth-drying finish but, even if fairly unruly right now, it has the fruity resiliency to argue that better awaits some six to eight years down the line."
  • 91 points, Wine Enthusiast Magazine, August 2015

"Encomium" Cabernet Sauvignon

2008
  • 90 points, Wine Enthusiast, August 2011.......... "A rich, soft oaky Cabernet, forward and appealing in blackberry and cherry jam, cassis, mocha and olive flavors.  Shows the class and distinction of the vineyard sources in Napa and Sonoma."
2010
  • 90 points, Wine Enthusiast, June 2013.......... "This is an upscale Cabernet, rich in black currants, mocha and oak, and framed in sturdy tannins. Shows lots of class despite the statewide California appellation."

"Montecillo" Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma Valley)

2009
  • 90 points, Wine Enthusiast, March 2012.......... "Generous in blackberries, blueberries and cedar, with a pleasantly meaty, smoky edge.  Quite fine in its own way, but a bit angular at this time.  Blame it on immaturity, and give this young Cabernet at least five years to mellow out."
  • Gold Medal, 2012 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition
2010
  • Gold Medal, 2012 Sonoma County Harvest Fair
  • Gold Medal, 2013 Sonoma County Harvest Fair

"Montecillo" Zinfandel (Sonoma Valley)

2009
  • 90 points, Wine Enthusiast, August 2011.......... "A very nice Zin, lusty and rich, with ripe flavors of raspberries, cherries, red currants, licorice, smoked meat and dusty baking spices.  It's a big wine whose fruits and tannins suggest pairing with smoky barbecue."
2010
  • Gold Medal, 2012 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition
  • Gold Medal, 2012 Sonoma County Harvest Fair
  • 90 points, Wine Spectator Magazine, May 2013.......... "Intense and loaded with personality, offering bold black cherry and licorice aromas that lead to briary plum, espresso and roasted herb flavors wrapped in firm tannins. Best after 2014.

"Buchignani" Zinfandel (Dry Creek Valley)

2009
  • BEST OF CLASS, Gold Medal, 2011 Los Angeles International Wine Competition
  • Gold Medal, 2011 Sonoma Country Harvest Fair
2010
  • 91 points, Wine Enthusiast Magazine, June 2012........ "For whatever reason, Keating’s 2010 Zin represents a vast improvement over the ’09. It’s a pretty, polished Zinfandel, the kind called claret-style to distinguish its elegance and balance. Classic Dry Creek Valley, with wild berry, cola, sweet tobacco and spice flavors and briary tannins."
2011
  • Gold Medal, 2013 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition
2012
  • 91 points, Wine Enthusiast Magazine, June 2015......... "Structured in tight red-fruit character, this wine—from a two-acre, dry-farmed vineyard—is floral and nicely adorned in acidity, making for an elegant take on the variety. It is also not overdone in oak, letting the vibrant black cherry and just-picked blackberry dominate."

Rockpile Malbec

2006
  • Sweepstakes Gold Medal, 2009 Monterey Wine Competition
  • Gold Medal, 2010 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition
2007
  • Double Gold Medal, 2010 San Francisco International Wine Competition
  • Gold Medal, 2011 Los Angeles International Wine Competition
2008
  • Gold Medal, 2012 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition
  • 91 points, Wine Enthusiast Magazine, June 2012........ "What a delicious barbecue wine. It shows Malbec’s thick, sturdy tannins and California’s ripe, sweet fruit, in the way of blackberries, cassis and blueberries, with a savory streak of espresso. But it’s totally dry on the finish. Shows how well the Rockpile appellation ripens these big, full-bodied red wines."
2011
  • 91 points, Wine Enthusiast Magazine, February 2015....... "There's considerable earthiness to the nose of this Malbec, grown in Zin-heavy Rockpile. Soft and wrapped in cinnamon spice, its sizable tannins are offset by just enough acidity to keep the wine mouthwatering and mellowed."

Rockpile Petite Sirah

2007
  • 91 points, Wine Enthusiast, December 2009.......... "Captures the robust, fruity essence of Petite Sirah, in a balanced, richly tannic and ageworthy package. It’s completely dry, with complex waves of wild blueberries and blackberries, plums, mulberries, tobacco, leather, dark unsweetened chocolate and peppery spices. Good now, but will benefit from 6–10 years in the cellar."
  • Gold Medal, 2009 Sommelier Challenge
2009
  • 91 points, Wine Enthusiast, October 2012.......... "A big, strong, bold Petite Sirah, showing the variety's usual power, dryness and tannins. The warm-to-hot Rockpile appellation has ripened the wine to an incredible density of blackberries and roasted meats, yet the wine shows finesse despite its high alcohol. This will age for many years without developing additional interest, so drink now with lusty barbecue or beef and game stews."
  • 90 points, Robert Parker of The Wine Advocate, Issue #210....... "Keating’s 2009 Petite Sirah from the Rockpile AVA looks like black ink. Aromas of camphor, white flowers, blackberries and blueberries soar from the glass of this beauty, which possesses civilized tannins, full body, monster concentration, and a long, savory finish. Drink this impressive 2009 over the next two decades."
